A Proposal for the Ages
Over the past 3 years at Newton North I've learned a lot about who I am as a student. I know that I'm a very experiential learner and I crave any opportunity to learn outside of a classroom setting. I've had an interest in politics and know that I want to study political science or international affairs in college. Being able to do an internship in those fields would be perfect for me as it would be as beneficial, if not more so, than being in a classroom for second semester. I know that I want to push myself and my education and CAPS is the perfect way to do that.
My proposed internship would be interning in Rep. Joe Kennedy's Newton District office. I would be able to work with his office on local issues as well as outreach in addition to office work. I have just submitted my resume and cover letter with his office. I also have talked to one of his close campaign advisors who is a friend of my family who is going to talk with the office in order for the internship to be set up officially.
Because the office is only a few blocks away from North, I can easily get to and from the office from school. During the day I will be working there and then during afternoon, evenings, and weekends I will be able to work on my portfolio and eventually my presentation. Both web portfolios and presentations are a strong suit of mine and I'm not worried about those. I feel I will have plenty of time to efficiently and exceptionally complete all aspects of the program.
This internship makes me excited for a few reasons. First of all, I think that I will be able to learn a lot from working in the office of Rep. Kennedy. I find the work he does if very interesting and I'm enthusiastic to help work with him locally. I'm excited to see further into the political system, especially in the current political climate. I think it would be a loss to not take an opportunity like this in a time that is so historical in our country. I think this will be able to put me on a great track going into a college potentially in Washington, D.C. This internship with Rep. Kennedy seems like the perfect opportunity and I'm excited to take part in it.
I don't have many concerns about the program. The only concern I have would be fitting in my hours around extracurricular but, as I touch on in the next question, I don't see it becoming an issue. I feel that I am more than prepared to work around any commitments and would be able to more than fulfill my requirements.
I took Close Up my sophomore year and went to DC with the class. This gave me a deeper look into the political system as well as actually introduced me to Rep. Kennedy and brought me to his office. Two years ago I went to Peru for 5 weeks to volunteer in orphanages. This would help me with interpersonal work I might come upon as well as gives me experience to draw on in a political internship. My work as a lifeguard I feel has prepared me for any mundane work I might come upon because lifeguarding is a lot of just sitting and waiting.
